Life Questions:

In addition to providing uplifting music, Radio Delta Inter gives you Christian advice and as you walk through the challenges of life. The following are some common answers to questions that listeners have about marriage, faith, the Bible and a host of other topics. If you have a question feel free to contact us.

Question: “Why do I seem to fail in the same areas over and over?” Bob, NC
Answer: James says we all sin in different ways (James 3:2), and that means each of us has what may be called “besetting” sins. Some sins are easier to overcome than others. The point is that each of us has a sin (or some sins) with which we struggle. These besetting sins are habits that we developed during our lives as unbelievers and require more grace and discipline to overcome. Part of the process of overcoming these habitual, or besetting, sins is in recognizing the transformation that has indeed taken place within the believer. Paul writes, “So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus” (Romans 6:11) When Paul says, “consider yourselves dead to sin,” he is telling us to remember that in coming to Christ, the power of sin has been broken in our lives.

Question: “How do I know when I am addicted to something and when I just enjoy something?” Allen, NE
Answer: An addiction is an enslaving destructive dependency. One definition is; “the state of being enslaved to a habit or practice or to something that is psychologically or physically habit-forming, as narcotics, to such an extent that its cessation causes severe trauma.” Now, because a person can be physically predisposed to an addiction, and because of the likelihood of medical complications, addictions are often viewed as a disease. It would be a mistake, however, to think only in terms of the physical dimensions. Most addictions are also rooted in moral choices and spiritual needs. What is the most important is not whether we are predisposed to an enslaving habit but whether we are willing to do whatever it takes to bring this predisposed “diseased body,” habit, or idol under the control of reason and faith. Rom 7:22-25, “but I see another law at work in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my members. What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God – through Jesus Christ our Lord!”

Question: “Is smoking a sin?” — Stan, AR
Answer: Smoking is never directly mentioned in the Bible. We do find that there are principles, however, that definitely apply to smoking. The Bible commands us not to allow our bodies to become “mastered” by anything. “Everything is permissible for me — but not everything is beneficial. Everything is permissible for me — but I will not be mastered by anything” 1 Corinthians 6:12. Smoking is definitely strongly addictive. Later in the same passage we are told, “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20. Smoking is undoubtedly very bad for your health. There are many true believers in Jesus Christ who smoke. Smoking does not prevent a person from being saved. Nor does it cause a person to lose salvation. Smoking is no less forgivable than any other sin, smoking is a sin that should be forsaken and, with God’s help, overcome.
Question: “I struggle with some particular sins that seems to have a stronghold on me. What can I do?” — Brian, MA
Answer: We all sin, and we all commit the same sins over and over. Even the mighty Paul had this problem. “For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. For what I do is not the good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do — this I keep on doing.” (Romans 7:18-19) When you sin, confess and receive your forgiveness. (1 John 1:9) For God, that’s the end of it and He forgets it ever happened. You do the same. Repeat the verse from James 4:7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you .Guilt does not come from God. You resist the devil by seeing the guilt for what it is, his effort to keep you from God, and rejecting it. Stay in fellowship with the other Christians and believe the word of God that you are free.
